Will a 22 kW EV charger charge your EV any faster?

Every EV has an onboard AC charger, and it is a hard ceiling. A 22 kW EV charger feeding a car with a 7 kW onboard charger delivers 7 kW — no more. Pick your model and see the real overnight numbers before anyone quotes you for a supply upgrade.

Worth 11 kW — but 22 kW adds nothing.

This car accepts 11.0 kW. If you already have three-phase supply, commissioning at 11 kW cuts the charge from 5h 46m to 3h 53m. Going to 22 kW saves a further zero minutes, because the car caps first.

Two numbers people forget to ask about

Neither of these appears on a quotation, and both change what a home charger really costs you over the years you own it.

Roughly what 100 km costs charging at home, at about 16 kWh/100 km on a 40–57 sen/kWh domestic block under the July 2025 TNB tariff. The same 100 km on petrol is around RM 25.

What we will not quote you for

  • A three-phase supply upgrade your car cannot use.
  • A charger with no local spare parts or firmware support.
  • An install without a Chargeman’s certificate — that is not a saving, it is an insurance problem.
  • Cable sized to the quote instead of to the run.

This sequence is set by regulation, not by us — Chargeman certification and TNB notification are legally required on a fixed EV charging installation in Malaysia.

Straight answers

Do I need 22 kW to be future-proof?
Almost certainly not. Onboard AC chargers have not been getting faster — manufacturers put their money into DC fast charging instead. Your next EV is more likely to accept 11 kW than 22 kW. And using 22 kW at home needs three-phase supply, which is usually the expensive half of the project. Buy the home EV charger that matches the car in your porch, and use public DC when you need speed.
How long does a home charge actually take?
On 7.4 kW single-phase, a typical 60 kWh EV goes from 20% to 90% in roughly six hours — comfortably overnight. On 11 kW, about four. Anything faster than that at home is solving a problem most drivers do not have, because the car sits still for eight hours anyway.
Can I install a charger in a condominium?
Yes, but it starts as a management process rather than an electrical one: written JMB or MC approval, a cable route from the riser to your bay, and usually a dedicated sub-meter so the charging is billed to you. Expect longer lead times than a landed home. Ask us for the JMB submission pack.
Is charging from a 13 A wall socket safe?
A portable charger pulls around 2.3 kW continuously for eight to twelve hours. Household socket outlets and their wiring were not designed for that duty cycle, and the failure mode is heat at the plug. Fine as an occasional backup; not a home charging solution.
Does the installation have to be certified?
Yes. A fixed EV charging installation must be wired and certified by a competent person registered with Suruhanjaya Tenaga. An uncertified job is what an insurer will point at after a fire, and it can complicate a property sale. Certification is included in every ChargeSini quote.
Will home charging trip my main fuse?
It can, if your incoming supply is modest and the aircon, water heater and oven are all running. That is what dynamic load management is for — a CT clamp on the incoming main lets the wallbox back off automatically instead of tripping the house. We fit it whenever the survey shows headroom is tight.
Can I charge on off-peak rates?
If you are on a Time-of-Use domestic tariff, yes — schedule the session in the app and the car charges in the cheap window. Whether ToU is worth switching to depends on your whole household’s daytime consumption, not just the EV, so we will run the numbers with you rather than assume.
What is the warranty?
Two years on every AC and DC EV charger we supply, with spare parts held locally and support through the same team that runs our public network. Ask any supplier where their replacement stock physically sits before you buy.
